🎤 Production Notes

I had to create this while away from home. I packed up a Shure SM7B, my Rodecaster Pro and travelled to Kläppen, near Sälen in Northern Stockholm. The story of the live broadcast a few weeks earlier:https://erik.zalitis.se/retrotech/going-live-a-tale-from-the-radio-trenches/Colophon:Edison invented the light bulb and light bulbs are often symbols for great ideas in cartoons. It's probably not one of my most convoluted title-origins.

Flashback – tracks from the past – Show intro

DJ Daemon Welcome to another Flashback, tracks from the past. Ahoy there maid is no no no nobody likes that anymore. Just stop. okay, what has a badly made pirate hats, a barn filled with geeks in northern Stockholm and the newest and coolest tracked music in common?

DJ Daemon speaks: Ahoy there mateys… No! No! Nobody likes that anymore…. Just stop… Ehhmm… What have badly made pirate hats, a barn filled with geeks in northern Stockholm and newest and the coolest tracked music in common? That would be Edison Party 2021 – the piracy themed demo party that ran from…

DJ Daemon Well, that would be Edison Party 2021, the piracy themed demo party that ran from the ninth of July until the eleventh. Today we give you the tracked music top list, the highlights, and in the end of the show, fsFreak tells you the whole story of Edison.

Drax – AMBIVALENCE by DRAX

DJ Daemon speaks. 39s

DJ Daemon Drax and Ambivalence The first harbor we stop by today is of course the Tracked Music Competition. We have 11 Amiga, C64 and NES entries to play, so let's get going. On place 11, we find a Morbid of five finger punch, who hails from southern Stockholm in Sweden and starts up this list with a Leftovers.Grabbing the lost position with sixty seven points.

Morbid of Five Finger Punch – Leftovers

DJ Daemon speaks. 31s

DJ Daemon On 10th place, it's an epic fight between man and chicken. Demon chicken, even. The song is called Demon Chicken Boss Fight, made on Fasttracker. And it was made by Edwind of MemoryLeek. And of course, it's the Demon Chicken or Devil Chicken from Monkey Island that's at fault here. 81 points.

Edvind of MemoryLeek – Demon Chicken Boss Fajt

DJ Daemon Second clause in this place. Okay. Well, time for position number nine, and that would be a ghost ship by Cynastasia from Defect and Rift. Another Amiga Tune. For your pleasure, racking up 92 points.

DJ Daemon speaks. 23s

Synesthesia of Defekt ^ Rift – Ghost ship

DJ Daemon speaks. 24s

DJ Daemon Position 8. And we are back into the C64 part of the demo scene. Yes, it's called Strange Range by Sawyer of Censor Design, with a pretty woman's face and 99 points to boot.

Soya of Censor Design – Strange Range

DJ Daemon So how was the future back then? Well, actually E!ghtbm seems to have an idea about it. Retro Super Future 87 is yet another tracked tune. And it gets 100 points.

DJ Daemon speaks. 31s

e!ghtbm – Retrosuperfuture-87

DJ Daemon Let's rock.

DJ Daemon speaks. 25s

DJ Daemon On place six and grabbing one 103 points that would be Bionic Symbiote by Slaze of Defiance. Slaze coming from Sweden is no longer last place slays. This one really got some serious beats.

Slaze of Defiance – Bionic symbiote

DJ Daemon Place 5. And it seems like the Swedes are dominating this. You know, Soya from Censor Design and Slaze from Defiance, both Swedish. So E!ghtbm is the odd one out here from Poland. And again, now it's time for Vedder of Insane, and yes, he is Swedish. And the song is an Amiga one called Glorious Disaster, and it gets 106 points.

DJ Daemon speaks. 42s

Vedder – Glorious disaster

DJ Daemon speaks. 29s

DJ Daemon Alright, this is something. Something you don't hear every day at least. That would be the Captain Medley. And it's from Orrebore of The Art of Never Getting Anything Done. It grabs fourth place with an NES, that is Nintendo Entertainment System track. And 110 points.

OrreBorre of The Art Of Never Getting Anything Done – Captain Medley

DJ Daemon speaks. 29s

DJ Daemon And we are on bronze position. We are going on with Fegolhuzz of Fairlight, and yes, that's Swedish. Swedish as apple pie. Suzanne Reuter is the song, and it's a reference to actress Susanne Reuter. It's made for the Commodore 64 and gets third place 115 points.

Fegolhuzz – Suzanne Router

DJ Daemon No.

DJ Daemon speaks. 30s

DJ Daemon The silver medal goes to the team that gave us Brofist, you know, the winner of the Revision demo party 2021. We're talking about Croatian artist Bonefish and Swedish Mug. The song it's called Two Days Later and grabs second place on 116 points.

Bonefish and Mygg of iNSANE – 2 days later final

DJ Daemon speaks. 32s

DJ Daemon Gold time people. And it's not every day you hear of a C64 tune grabbing the first position on a tracked compo. But yeah, it does. It's Hexputs. Or Hexputs or something, I don't know. It's by Stinsen of Genesis Project. Yeah, I'm gonna say it. He's Swedish. And it's 117 points. Enjoy!

Stinsen – Hexputs

DJ Daemon speaks.56s

DJ Daemon We are at the end of the list. Edison Party 2021, as I said previously, ran on the 9th of July, and it was under heavy competition, fierce competition even from three other demo parties. So it made a rather good impression irregardless if you ask me. Thirty to forty people came to Eggeby in northern Stockholm on location. And I was one of them. And also a number of people were online. I don't know how many they were. And I broadcast live on Friday and on Saturday. So for me it was great to be back on a real physical demo party meeting real people.

Drax – B. O. Beyond by DRAX

DJ Daemon speaks. 30s

DJ Daemon Drax BO Beyond. This is the Ericade Radio Network and Flashback, tracks from the Past. Your favourite podcast, I hope. So about Edison 2021. Let's talk about it from the beginning to the end, but I'm not the right person to do so, so I say hello to a person that can give you all the little details.

fsFreak Hello, my name is Albin and I'm one of the main orgas this year.

The ERICADE Radio Network – Interview with FSFreak, organizer at Edison 2021

DJ Daemon Yeah, and you're known to the world as fsFreak. Yes. What any any reason for that name?

fsFreak It's kind of a long story. It's kind of a combination of different things. It's a bit long to take here actually. But I've used it for maybe 15 years so it feels stupid to change it now.

DJ Daemon No no it works.

fsFreak Definitely, yeah. And it's kind of unique as well, that's pretty fun. If you Google it, will probably find me.

DJ Daemon Yeah, I mean I mean you remember the guys that could have like, I don't know, "Satan" or "Hellraiser" or ... it's like dime a dozen of those. Yeah. All right. so let's take this qu quickly. You are as you call yourself, an Orga. that is you are organizing the organizing. Yeah. So please tell me, how did you get into Edison?

fsFreak Exactly.

fsFreak I visited first in, I think it was 2015. There is another party called Birdie in Uppsala of Sweden and we met a few guys from Edison there and they said, hey,How would you like to join our party? We are always looking for more people to come and visit. We have made lot of productions on Birdie and they say, hey, you can come to a real demo party. Without video games and stuff like that. Birdie is kind of a mixed bag. There's both gaming and scene related stuff as well.

DJ Daemon Are you more into retro scene or current stuff?

fsFreak When the productions I've been involved with is like new school productions, PC and... But when I make music I still use like old 90s tracker software Amiga.

DJ Daemon Yeah, okay, but when you say new school and old old school, I I kinda get what you mean, but when is the kinda year that changes from new to old or back?

fsFreak Yeah, that's kind of a... I don't think there's like a super clear distinction there. would say, I mean PC used to also be old school when you look at like old school PC demos from the 90s, early 2000s. But I think these days when we talk about old school we are talking about like Commodore 64, Atari, Amiga, Yeah, kind of, I mean PC took over.So old school is more like these old platforms which are still very much alive thanks to the demo scene.

DJ Daemon Yeah really, you you're really carrying the torch for an old tradition, so to speak. Okay, so now we know that.

fsFreak Yeah.

fsFreak Yeah, I'm not exactly sure when the first party was I joined in I went here the first time at least 2015 and I kind of became part of the organization more and more as the years went by so I would say last year and this year I would consider myself a main orga with with the yeah withYeah, being like involved from the start. In the beginning I just held a few special composes, like live composes and stuff like that. So guess that's how I became involved more.

DJ Daemon Okay, so here's a thing. Why is it called Edison? Is it a connection to the f famous in inventor or something else y you know?

fsFreak Yeah, I I've heard the story. was, I think there was like an organization like a, I don't know the word in English, like a non-profit organization which called themselves Edis. And then I think it came naturally that, hey, we're going to organize a demo party, let's call it Edison. Don't write this on Wikipedia.

DJ Daemon Okay.

fsFreak I think there is some somewhere along those lines.

DJ Daemon Yeah yeah. Definitely a cool name if not anything. I mean and how did you get to Eggeby gård? long as I've been involved here as yeah, normal visitor, it's always been here.

fsFreak Yeah, I think I'm not sure. I also not sure. I think you need to do another interview later with Weyland. I think he knows more actually about the history.

DJ Daemon Yeah, okay. Yeah, yeah, that's cool. But I was thinking, so now you're back after the Corona. Were you scared to go here? I mean I mean after all, I mean...

fsFreak Yeah, no, not really. mean, last year we did like a pure online event, which was really fun as well. I didn't think it was going to be that fun, but it was actually like a really good vibe going on on Twitch and in the chat and everything. But no, I wasn't scared. I got my flu shots and everything. I my vaccination.

DJ Daemon Yeah, yeah I got I got my second shot yesterday actually. So I don't know. I hope the Delta thing isn't a problem.

fsFreak problem. Yeah hopefully and since there's also still the venue is still limited to 50 people so we're I mean we're doing everything online as well so everyone can participate.

DJ Daemon Yeah, I guess most people are online there. Okay, so what can you expect from Edison? If if you didn't really know about it, just seem okay demo party, w what are you o offering?

fsFreak Yeah, I would say anyone who's into like creative stuff, I mean, it can be music, can be like animation or video or programming, like graphics programming. I would say come here or at least like check out the stream and see what it's all about and also the people. People are really inclusive andI mean there is a rivalry but it's friendly rivalry. It's not like way back when when crack groups were like you know competing and...

DJ Daemon yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember that. When when everyone I I mean the word labor was kinda like if you were not good. Yeah. Yeah, but it wasn't the the term the way I understand it is like someone who is totally incompetent and n doesn't know about how to do a demo. But in the demo scene it's more was used against people that knew what they were doing, but they weren't good. Yeah.

fsFreak Yeah

DJ Daemon But I get a feeling that when people get older this kind of animosity it runs away. Yeah and you get more like it's just cool to meet.

fsFreak Exactly, it's nice to meet, it's nice to talk to people, you can always learn more stuff. I would say, even if you don't think you will win with a production, enter with it anyway. Participation these days is way more encouraging and interesting than...Even if you know this group is going to be here, they will probably win the demo compo. Strange things still happen. Funny side story, I may. First year I came here with my group. We entered with something really simple, a PC demo.was not thinking, yeah, we want to win, but we still want to show, hey, we are here now and here's our tag or whatever. But we actually managed to beat one of the biggest demo groups in Sweden. They got third place and we got second place. So that is not bad. No, no, I mean, OK, they weren't really trying their hardest, but still, just to see this group on the score list was pretty funny.

DJ Daemon That's a thing, if you really want to win, you try hard and then you may have a better chance. I mean getting a bit stuffed and fat and saying, Hey, I don't care, I'm the best I mean that's not a good recipe for no No Okay. so today we had a bit of a slow start, but we are going on here. We had some demos. What's happening tomorrow?

fsFreak Tomorrow is the big day when all the competitions, like this year's entries will be displayed and people are still sitting around here working on them. Of course I see people making music over here. see people programming, all kinds of cool stuff. that's the main event, that's like seeing all the creativity come together, all the entries.Participants, entries. So yeah, that's for sure the biggest thing. Today there is going to be pretty soon like a live graphics duel which is like when two artists compete live head to head. They only have 15 minutes to make something cool. It's not really any prestige that completes more like fun for the audience, I would say. It's kind hard to find people who want to be live, doing something, but I keep telling them it's for fun.

DJ Daemon Yeah, I mean so. I mean even if you really screw up, people are gonna have a laugh.

fsFreak Exactly, mean still and people vote, mean you can probably win that round in that comp just for doing something fun and unexpected.

DJ Daemon Yeah that seems like a plan. Okay, I got okay Sun Sunday is not much going on there, you closing...

fsFreak Yeah pretty much. People wake up, have breakfast and yeah and not too long for next year.

DJ Daemon Okay, I g Yeah. I I got one last question for you. Because I'm doing a podcast that kinda play the tracked music that compete in in the competition, can you tell me just a little bit about the tracked demo competition?

fsFreak Yeah sure, so that is a music compo where you're only supposed to use a tracker program which is like a pretty old school way, a pretty, what would you call it, like a step sequencer. An old school step sequencer which was really popular on Amiga and later PC as well. So I mean the only limitation really isbecause people have done some super incredible things with those programs. But it's more like you're limited to these formats like the mod format and the XM format or S3M and stuff like that. You can't really hand in an mp3. There's like a wild, that's the like the streaming music compo and that's cool as well but this is a bit more constrained.

DJ Daemon speaks. 43s
