Podcast episode profile for 37. The Phoenix Station Update

On wednesday, a major part of the station failed mid-broadcast. The station was back an hour later, but left the recording desk inoperable. DJ Daemon has fixed up enough of it to allow the podcast to be made. But no time for cool stories. It's about the music and some upcoming features.

DJ Daemon Welcome to another episode of Flashback, Tracks from the Past, the show that takes you back to the golden age of the tracked music scene. Alright, today it's another station update and the newest music just in from the Amiga Modular Archive, the best of the best. At any rate, we had some technical malfunctions this week, so I'm broadcasting this from a provisionallocation and yeah you can hear the smattering rain on the window.

DJ Daemon giving you the podcast throughout the summer and all the new music.

DJ Daemon It's not every day you hear jazz on this station and podcast, but when you do, you know it's something special. And that was Carlos Autumn in Budapest. So, OK, what's up? Well, I kind of got a really good feeling for covering all those demo parties and the track to music competitions. And I will continue doing so. Last episode, we spoke about good data and Edison coming up.this summer and yeah we will try to cover it and make sure you get that great music in a list format. Yeah we start with the least popular and end up with the winner.

DJ Daemon Format back again, and so are we. Okay, we have some jingles that are coming up. I haven't had the time to re-format the station, so to speak. We are, as you know, not only Amiga right now, but there are some nice messages from Nicole Carino, our station voice, coming up, and you will be hearing them, well, during this week, and the next one, so to speak. And Derrickade Radio Network keeps broadcasting throughout the summer. I don't know how much time I will have to actually be hosting it, but hey, there's a lot of great music.

DJ Daemon Okay, that is quite a long tone to go out on. Decibelter Night Dreams. So, what's coming up? I'm waiting for Workbench 3.2 or Amiga OS 3.2. I hope I can do some kind of episode about that, what it means, its history and all of that. So, wait for that in an upcoming episode of Flashback Tracks from the Past.

DJ Daemon format and eternity. Next week I intend to make another of those technical discussions on YouTube where I will talk about master compression that is how we make the sound on this station sound as tight and compact and still powerful as it does so if you're into the technology side of things that's where you will be headingI also intend to talk a little bit in a later podcast about a graphics card that I bought. I haven't received it yet, but it's from an Amiga 3000 and it seems to be really something special. well, stay a while for that on the station. In a few weeks, I hope.

DJ Daemon Traeor and Gothyr, 2 minutes to midnight, heavier than we generally play on this station. Now I have a question for you, what do you want to hear on flashback tracks from the past? What subjects would be nice to talk about? We have a little list so to speak, with stuff that would be magnificent to discuss. But hey, we need more suggestions, so go to our Discord channel, discord.io slash t-e-r-n andSound off. It's night forever So I gotta tell you something about the summer plans for this podcast. Yeah, I told you it's going to broadcast throughout the summer, but my other podcast Eat the Secrets Poden for those of you listening to that will take vacation between July and part of August so there you are The Rekade Radio Network remains on you know it

DJ Daemon Jaijung, castle courtyard, 9 minutes and 37 seconds of niceness. And I know, I complain a lot about the Swedish summer, because you know, no sun and only rain and all that things, but actually it is the truth. Today was sunny, I was so happy, I went out to a hilltop here, listening to the radio and drinking coffee. The good stuff. Okay.could have ended happy as well if it weren't for, well, the rain came in in a few minutes. I was sitting one moment in the sunshine and the next moment I was running to cover because the skies really opened up.

DJ Daemon Exodus and the saturation part one Have you heard about the new vampire card? Yeah, they're releasing one for the Amiga 1200 This is a stripped down version with only the acceleration parts left in and it has FPGA acceleration as you expected to and the 6880 Virtual CPU if you want to it's awesome, but it doesn't have the RTG and the other stuffstuff that you expect from it. it may actually be the cheapest way you can accelerate a computer on an Amiga 1200 simply. So take a look at it. It's far better I would say as a deal than trying to find some Blizzard Phase 5 whatever on eBay.

DJ Daemon Ellwood, fine day. We are about to close shop here. The Arikade Radio Network keeps broadcasting 24-7 and this podcast will be over soon. The next episode is next Saturday and then on your favorite podcast player. We're going on with Joggeir Liljedal untouched and if you look in the instrument list you will find it's actually dedicated to what I believe is an old girlfriend of his.

DJ Daemon sometimes called the illness by people here. It's a predominantly male hobby. Are there any good female-tracked music artists? Yes, yes, a lot of them. Here is one. That would be Luvia of TPOLM and a little Swedish boy. And then we're entering the night, so to speak, with Yugi of Complex and onwards. Thank you for listening.

DJ Daemon

He got his Commodore 64 in 1989 and his first Amiga in 1990. A huge fan of tracker music and have had a long standing dream to create a radio show playing that kind of music. In 2020, that dream came true and in december Amiga Flashback started as a podcast. It was later renamed Flashback, tracks from the past and here we are.
He is also an orga for Swedish demo party Edison and a total retro nerd.

Mp3 file details

Waveform of episode 37, The Phoenix Station Update, left channel above, right channel below: level in dB against time, 1:03:55 long. Open the waveform at full size (opens in a new tab)
Waveform A picture of the whole recording from start to end. The taller the shape, the louder that moment; the left channel is on top and the right channel below it. The scale up the side is the level in dB, the one along the bottom is the time. Select the picture to open it at full size.
Scan status Whether the station’s analyser could read this mp3. “OK” means every number in this box was measured from the actual audio, not copied from a tag that somebody typed.
OK
measured from the file itself
Scanned When the file was last analysed. If the mp3 is replaced afterwards, these numbers describe the old version until it is scanned again.
File size How much room the mp3 takes on a disk, and how much data you use when you play or download it. It is roughly the bit rate multiplied by the length.
88.0 MB
92 291 589 bytes
File last changed When the mp3 on our server was last written - usually the day it was uploaded, or encoded again.
Length How long the recording plays. It is measured from the audio itself, so it is right even when a tag in the file says something else.
1:03:55
hours : minutes : seconds
Bit rate How much data is spent on each second of sound. More data keeps more detail when the audio is squeezed into an mp3: 128 kbit/s is acceptable, 192 is good, and 320 is the most an mp3 can hold.
193 kbit/s
good quality
Sample rate Digital audio is a long row of measurements of the sound wave. This is how many are taken every second. 44.1 kHz is the CD standard and 48 kHz the video and broadcast standard - both capture everything a human ear can hear.
44.1 kHz
44 100 measurements a second
Channels How many separate signals the file holds. Mono is one. Stereo is two - left and right - which is what lets a sound be placed somewhere between your speakers.
Stereo
2 channels
Codec The method used to shrink the audio. MP3 leaves out the detail an ear is least likely to miss, which makes the file about a tenth of the size of the original recording.
MP3
Loudness The average loudness of the whole recording, the way a listener hears it (“integrated loudness”, in LUFS). The closer to 0, the louder. Music services aim for about -14 and podcasts for about -16, so that you do not have to reach for the volume between tracks.
−8.4 LUFS
on the loud side
Loudness range The distance between the quiet passages and the loud ones, in LU (1 LU is 1 dB). A small number means an even, compressed sound - good in a car or on a phone. A large number means big swings between soft and loud.
2.3 LU
very even
True peak The highest level the signal ever reaches, including the peaks that appear between the measurements when the file is turned back into sound. 0 is the ceiling: above about -1 dBTP, a recording can crackle (“clip”) on some players.
1.6 dBTP
close to the ceiling - may distort on some players
Dynamic range How far the loudest peaks stand above the loud parts of the recording, in dB - the “DR” number that music collectors compare albums by. A low number (under 8) means the sound has been squeezed until everything is equally loud: punchy, but tiring to listen to. 14 and up means the music has room to breathe, with real hits and real quiet. It says nothing about how loud the file is: turning the volume down does not change it. Chip music made of steady square waves naturally lands low.
DR 8
7.6 dB · heavily compressed
Left channel level The average strength of the left channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the right channel.
−10.3 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Right channel level The average strength of the right channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the left channel.
−10.5 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Channel balance The left level minus the right level. Close to 0 dB means both sides are equally loud. More than about 1 dB and the whole mix leans towards one ear.
0.18 dB
balanced
Stereo width How strong the part that DIFFERS between left and right is, compared with the part they share. A very low number (-40 dB or less) means both sides carry the same sound - mono in practice. A higher number means a wider stereo picture; a very high one can sound thin on a single speaker.
−8.4 dB
ordinary stereo
Cover art in the file Whether a picture is stored inside the mp3 itself. A player shows it as the album art when the file is played somewhere else - in a car, on a phone, offline.
Yes

ID3 tags Text stored inside the mp3 file itself - title, artist, album and so on. It is what a music player, a phone or a car stereo shows while it plays the file, and it travels with the file wherever it is copied.

album The album or collection the file says it belongs to. Stations and encoders sometimes use this field for notes of their own.
Flashback - Tracks from the past
artist Who made or performs the recording, as it is written inside the file.
The ERICADE Radio Network
album_artist The artist of the whole album, which a player uses to keep a compilation together.
The ERICADE Radio Network
comment A free note somebody left inside the file.
https://radio.ericade.net/podcast/
composer Who wrote the music, when that is somebody other than the performer.
Erik Zalitis
genre The style of music, or the kind of programme, the file says it is.
Podcast
title The name of the recording, as it is written inside the file.
Flashback, tracks from the past #37 - The Phoenix Station Update
track The number of this recording within its album - for a podcast, usually the episode number.
37
date The year, or date, the file says the recording is from.
2021
