Podcast episode profile for 14. Not much of a plan 9 from outer space

20 minutes before the show would “Air”, I knew it could be done. My plan was to record it later. But as my previous engagements fell throutgh, I sprung into action and got all things good from Amiga Modules Archive with a rating of 9 out of 10. Hence the cheezy reference to the old sci-fi turkey created by Ed Wood. Then I voice tracked at a warp 10 speed and barely got it out in time.

Jingle - Top of the hour - Good evening

DJ Daemon You are listening to the Ericade Radio Network. Good evening and welcome to another hour of Amiga Retro music. And Amiga Flashback. It's Saturday and we are doing some miscellaneous stuff, but I want a cool name for it. So I'm going to call it Plan 9 from outer space.

DJ Daemon speaks.

Amiga - a

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon Hey! Okay, so what are we doing today? And why is it called Plan 9 from Outer Space? You probably know Ed Wood's very horrible science fiction movie with that name. But no, that's not the plan. That's not the whole thing. That's not why we have nine in it. It's not the Beatles connection either. The idea is the following. We have taken songs that are rated nine out of ten. And that's the only thing we play today. So, enjoy! It's too good to be. True, I guess?

2good2be

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon It's a nice time to pour yourself some tea, some coffee, some whiskey or whatever you fancy. And just relax back and listen to the music, because I don't have much to tell today when it comes to stories. But I have a lot of good memories in music form, so let's continue in that way.

aquatica

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon Squatica! Another of those 9 out of 10 tunes that we are so fond of today. DJ Daemon here and today the whole station blew up again for no apparent reason the servers stopped working. But it was easy to fix, just give it the old boot and it's coming back online. It's probably doing this to give me more grey hair.

all_for_the_rain

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon all for the rain and I am all for the rain especially when the rain is outside and I'm dry on the inside. The opposite is kinda troublesome and expensive so let's skip that. Also remember this podcast can be found where you find podcasts just search for the Ericade Radio Network.

astroflx

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon Astro-Efflex. And we are going on with a blue-eyes girl. Not blue-eyed, it's eyes. I'm pretty sure that's because most women have two eyes. That's an observation.

blue_eyes_girl

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon I have an idea for an upcoming episode of Amiga Flashback. It will be called Retro Politics. And no, no, no, no, I will not talk politics that way. It's not like a left-wing or right-wing argument or anything. Just how I, as a kid and a young, well, teenager, remembered the politics of the 80s and 90s before I was kinda aware of what things were. You know, the Soviet Union, the fall of said Soviet Union.Well, Demauer, Ronald Reagan in office, and a lot of those things like Chernobyl and yeah, just telling the stories a little bit blue-eyed and naive maybe, but still it is part of what we do remember.

blu_funk-statement

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon out for the halftime break. There will be no break, just more music. That was Blue Funk Statement and we're going on with Bloodfest.

bloodfist

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon rainy and thunderous and a sideshow of crickets I believe. That is weather we will not be experiencing for quite some time as we are in the middle of the winter. It's a snowy white wonderland and if you're gonna be sad in Swedish we have a song called Gamle svarton. It's about an old man who rides his horse somewhere and he promised the horse soon you will rest.If you listen to the original song that is called Old Faithful, you know exactly where the horse is going as he's sending the poor thing to the slaughterhouse. But it is a nice little song, isn't it?

approaching_antares

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon approaching Antares and I don't know we are probably far away from there it feels like we are in this part of the year where we are far away from pretty much everything it's cold it's dark sometimes you get snow sometimes you do not and you just wonder where did all the money go because gifts are expensive and that booze is not gonna pay for itself but there we arelonging for the sun that will one day grace our part of the world we can hope.

_2010_survival_

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon The song is called Twenty Ten Survival. That's a good name for a song, it's ten years ago and we just passed the Twenty Twenty Survival challenge. And here we are. Actually, when March came and I was thinking about this corona that just had happened, I wondered, am I gonna see Twenty Twenty One? Well, surprise, surprise, I guess I did.

Amiga - a_z_d_te

DJ Daemon All around our universe We try so hard to feel What's Tonight, to look through my disguise The Milky Way lays a fine sight to see All around our universe We try so

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon A box in space?

DJ Daemon when they find out the names of those songs but I wonder what it tastes like.

algar-en_lada_i_rymden

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon flashback this is DJ Daemon and one hour of music and me desperately trying to find out what to say it doesn't work that well I'm afraid

alone

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon absolutely love this kind of music, it's cute, it feels good, it looks dreamy in a way. It's called Alone. Alone in the Dark? Nah, it's a computer game. Also, I take it back, actually the whole thing of finding out what to say is kinda easy, just don't talk too much and it will be fine no matter what.

Started in december 2020, Amiga Flashback was the first name of "Flashback, tracks from the past". It features nice midnight DJ banter from DJ Daemon, interviews, discussions about retro-stuff and lots of tracked music. Most of it is Amiga tracked tunes. In May 2021, it was renamed and started allowing all kinds of tracked tunes instead of mostly Amiga ones.

DJ Daemon

He got his Commodore 64 in 1989 and his first Amiga in 1990. A huge fan of tracker music and have had a long standing dream to create a radio show playing that kind of music. In 2020, that dream came true and in december Amiga Flashback started as a podcast. It was later renamed Flashback, tracks from the past and here we are.
He is also an orga for Swedish demo party Edison and a total retro nerd.

Mp3 file details

Waveform of episode 14, Not much of a plan 9 from outer space, left channel above, right channel below: level in dB against time, 59:59 long. Open the waveform at full size (opens in a new tab)
Waveform A picture of the whole recording from start to end. The taller the shape, the louder that moment; the left channel is on top and the right channel below it. The scale up the side is the level in dB, the one along the bottom is the time. Select the picture to open it at full size.
Scan status Whether the station’s analyser could read this mp3. “OK” means every number in this box was measured from the actual audio, not copied from a tag that somebody typed.
OK
measured from the file itself
Scanned When the file was last analysed. If the mp3 is replaced afterwards, these numbers describe the old version until it is scanned again.
File size How much room the mp3 takes on a disk, and how much data you use when you play or download it. It is roughly the bit rate multiplied by the length.
82.5 MB
86 531 428 bytes
File last changed When the mp3 on our server was last written - usually the day it was uploaded, or encoded again.
Length How long the recording plays. It is measured from the audio itself, so it is right even when a tag in the file says something else.
59:59
minutes : seconds
Bit rate How much data is spent on each second of sound. More data keeps more detail when the audio is squeezed into an mp3: 128 kbit/s is acceptable, 192 is good, and 320 is the most an mp3 can hold.
192 kbit/s
good quality
Sample rate Digital audio is a long row of measurements of the sound wave. This is how many are taken every second. 44.1 kHz is the CD standard and 48 kHz the video and broadcast standard - both capture everything a human ear can hear.
44.1 kHz
44 100 measurements a second
Channels How many separate signals the file holds. Mono is one. Stereo is two - left and right - which is what lets a sound be placed somewhere between your speakers.
Stereo
2 channels
Codec The method used to shrink the audio. MP3 leaves out the detail an ear is least likely to miss, which makes the file about a tenth of the size of the original recording.
MP3
Loudness The average loudness of the whole recording, the way a listener hears it (“integrated loudness”, in LUFS). The closer to 0, the louder. Music services aim for about -14 and podcasts for about -16, so that you do not have to reach for the volume between tracks.
−11.0 LUFS
on the loud side
Loudness range The distance between the quiet passages and the loud ones, in LU (1 LU is 1 dB). A small number means an even, compressed sound - good in a car or on a phone. A large number means big swings between soft and loud.
4.3 LU
very even
True peak The highest level the signal ever reaches, including the peaks that appear between the measurements when the file is turned back into sound. 0 is the ceiling: above about -1 dBTP, a recording can crackle (“clip”) on some players.
1.7 dBTP
close to the ceiling - may distort on some players
Dynamic range How far the loudest peaks stand above the loud parts of the recording, in dB - the “DR” number that music collectors compare albums by. A low number (under 8) means the sound has been squeezed until everything is equally loud: punchy, but tiring to listen to. 14 and up means the music has room to breathe, with real hits and real quiet. It says nothing about how loud the file is: turning the volume down does not change it. Chip music made of steady square waves naturally lands low.
DR 9
8.8 dB · moderately dynamic
Left channel level The average strength of the left channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the right channel.
−12.9 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Right channel level The average strength of the right channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the left channel.
−13.0 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Channel balance The left level minus the right level. Close to 0 dB means both sides are equally loud. More than about 1 dB and the whole mix leans towards one ear.
0.16 dB
balanced
Stereo width How strong the part that DIFFERS between left and right is, compared with the part they share. A very low number (-40 dB or less) means both sides carry the same sound - mono in practice. A higher number means a wider stereo picture; a very high one can sound thin on a single speaker.
−9.0 dB
ordinary stereo
Cover art in the file Whether a picture is stored inside the mp3 itself. A player shows it as the album art when the file is played somewhere else - in a car, on a phone, offline.
Yes

ID3 tags Text stored inside the mp3 file itself - title, artist, album and so on. It is what a music player, a phone or a car stereo shows while it plays the file, and it travels with the file wherever it is copied.

album The album or collection the file says it belongs to. Stations and encoders sometimes use this field for notes of their own.
Amiga Flashback
artist Who made or performs the recording, as it is written inside the file.
The ERICADE Radio Network
album_artist The artist of the whole album, which a player uses to keep a compilation together.
Erik Zalitis
comment A free note somebody left inside the file.
https://radio.ericade.net/
composer Who wrote the music, when that is somebody other than the performer.
Various
genre The style of music, or the kind of programme, the file says it is.
Podcast
title The name of the recording, as it is written inside the file.
Not much of a plan 9 from outer space
track The number of this recording within its album - for a podcast, usually the episode number.
14
date The year, or date, the file says the recording is from.
2021

Measured from the mp3 file on our server by the station’s own analyser. Point at a label, or select its question mark, for what the number means.
