🎤 Production Notes

It's the first proper demoscene toplist since 2025. And this one was made as a selection rather than a classic countdown episode. It was a good collection that really made it a breeze to make a good selection.

ericade.radio - Flashback, track from the past - let the toplist begin

StationID Flashback, Tracks from the past. Let the top list begin.

DJ Daemon We haven't done that for quite a while, but here we are again, and this time it's Deadline 26. It ran in Germany between the 2nd and 4th of October. And this hour we talk and play the best of the best. And not everyone, and not in any particular order. We are starting up today with the tune that came in third place on the demo party competition for streaming music. It's "Oh, so happy". And who is oh so happy? That would be MonoToni.

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

MonoToni - Oh so happy

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Now, that's a tune that makes you feel happy. I feel happy myself. It's a really, really awesome little cheerful song. Next up is Planefiller, and that is from another artist called Wrighter. They did not really have the same luck. They came in on 11th place in the demo party competition for streaming music. But it's softer, it's more, as I usually say, melodious, and has a nice set of synthy chords.

Wrighter - Planefiller

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Sometimes you need to remember where we came from. You know, the blippity-bloppity part of the scene, so to speak. A little bit of a chiptune feeling is "Kon kon", it's called. And it's from the artist by the name Crome, no relation to a browser, I would guess. And it came on a fourth place in the demo party competition for tracked music. Yes, this is track music galore, Fasttracker to be exact.

Crome - Kon kon

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Giving you a feeling of impending doom. Yeah, you feel that you're walking around in Zombieland and it's dark and they are watching you. You can hear them screaming for brains. This song fits perfectly to that movie. Zombie Walker, yeah, fitting, and it's Alysius. And yeah, it came on the sixth place in the demo party competition for streaming music.

Alysius - Zombie Walker

DJ Daemon It could be hard to understand jazz as the upper echelons of music for a guy like me who likes chiptune and tracker music and all that. But actually I think it totally is. And mix good jazz with good funk and you get a winner in my book. That would be the song, it's called A New Slice of Funk. And that would be by JCO. It came first place in the demo party competition for streaming music on Deadline.

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

JCO - A new slice of funk

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon You remember the 90s? Yeah I sure do, because you see, I was a community DJ broadcaster. Yeah, I was doing community broadcasting here in Stockholm in Sweden back then. And next up is a song that feels the love. Dots feel love. It's by W.O.T.W. and it sounds "the 90s" as it sounds a little bit Eurotechno, like that old song that they sing, Give Me Love or something like that. Yeah, totally awesome song.Yeah, it came on the first place in the tracker competition. And yeah, it's Amiga.

W.O.T.W. - Dots feel love!

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Yeah, okay, it's kinda close enough for a copyright strike. Nah, I'm just kidding. Not that bad, but it's a little bit too close for comfort. You know what this song used to be, right? So, well, SIDTunes, we don't play them very often, but this one it has to be played. It's Beyond the Light Wave, the ultimate version, and it came on third place in the demo party competition for old school music. And the artist you say that will be Alysius again, absolutely. That was from Deadline, and this is Flashback, tracks from the Past.

Alysius - Beyond the lightwave (Ultimate)

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon I'm not sure why we have another light wave song. Yeah, this one is also called Lightwave, and it is by the immensely talented Saga Musix. He came in well decently on fifth place in the demo party competition for streaming music on Deadline. Here we go.

Saga Musix - Light wave

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon I get the feeling that Slaxx is a little bit ticked off at Nordlicht, because the song is called "No Nordlicht 2026". Yeah, okay, and that tune came in on second place in the demo party competition for tracked music. That's pretty awesome, and so is Fasttracker, because that's what it is. Hard Rock!

Slaxx - No Nordlicht 2026

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Riding an up tempo wind, and we will continue doing so. Dualtrax and ArtFx comes out with Palmarius, a song that came on the tenth place in the demo party competition for streaming music. Yes, it's still Deadline from Germany.

Dualtrax and Artfx - Palmarius

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Invasion!!! But who is invading? I have no idea you have to ask that question to N4cer. The song is called That at least. And it was a song that came on the ninth place in the demo party competition for streaming music on deadline. Here we go. It's really, really cinema-esque music, isn't it? Really scary. Really something bad has happened in this world.

N4cer - Invasion

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Demo sceners of Deadline. They sure love dance music, heavy beats, and rock and roll. And who can blame them? I sure won't. That's been quite a ride and very nice and very good music, this one. Yeah, and next one is not going to let us down. That would be Dawn Dance. It came on seventh place in the demo party competition for streaming music, I have you know. And that is by Obolebe.Obo Le Leb Bo Leb. Yeah, can't you choose some normal names, right? :).

Obolebe - Dawn dance

DJ Daemon presents the song from the competition.

DJ Daemon Never know how it starts and how it ends. Can be a very different song in the start and in the end. I like that. It's a bit unpredictable. Okay, okay, I heard it before because I kinda recorded the whole thing. Anyway, it was great. And we have one last tune from Deadline. Not all of them, mind you, but the ones I really, really like. And this one is called Keep Running. And it would be, Well, it is the Triad of.Cool stuff, of course, that would be Bacter, Jeenio and Saga Musix. And it came on third place in the demo party competition for tracked music. It's Impulsetracker this time.

Bacter and Jeenio and Saga Musix - Keep running

DJ Daemon presents the song from Xenium demo party and also thanks the artist.

DJ Daemon Yep, that's what we got from Deadline. I got a little bit more music to play, and I will go on with Anubis Revenge from the Xenium Demo Party. It's the music from the demo Amented by Duskwave, and it came on the fourth place in the Amiga demo competition. But we got the original song from Slaze himself. It's really, really up-tempo, it's heavy, it's typical Slaze, so to speak.

Slaze - Anubis revenge

DJ Daemon presents a song from the Arok competion earlier this year.

DJ Daemon We got two songs to go before the end of this episode of Flashback, tracks from the Past. And here is Delicate. It was a song that landed on place eight in the remix competition on the Arok Demo Party of 2026. And the artist is a guy I really like his stuff. He is especially talented in my in my views. It's Eivind Sommersten. I'm DJ Daemon and keep listening for a little bit.

Eivind Sommersten - Delicate

DJ Daemon thanks you for listening and leads you into that good night with the last song.

DJ Daemon Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah absolutely time to leave right now. Thanks for listening and leading you into that good night. Would be the last artist of the day. It's fsFreak with a song that's called Smile. It's actually from the Edison competition and it won the fifth place in the demo party for tracked music. It's a little bit special. Love the tune, it's awesome. Goodbye for now.I could just learn to play this stupid thing. but you can. So you may have to metaphorically make a deal with the devil. And by devil, I mean FS freak. And by metaphorically, I mean get your coat.

Fsfreak - Smile!

He got his Commodore 64 in 1989 and his first Amiga in 1990. A huge fan of tracker music and have had a long standing dream to create a radio show playing that kind of music. In 2020, that dream came true and in december Amiga Flashback started as a podcast. It was later renamed Flashback, tracks from the past and here we are.
He is also an orga for Swedish demo party Edison and a total retro nerd.

Mp3 file details

Waveform of episode 168, Deadline 2026 Music Highlights, left channel above, right channel below: level in dB against time, 1:01:12 long. Open the waveform at full size (opens in a new tab)
Waveform A picture of the whole recording from start to end. The taller the shape, the louder that moment; the left channel is on top and the right channel below it. The scale up the side is the level in dB, the one along the bottom is the time. Select the picture to open it at full size.
Scan status Whether the station’s analyser could read this mp3. “OK” means every number in this box was measured from the actual audio, not copied from a tag that somebody typed.
OK
measured from the file itself
Scanned When the file was last analysed. If the mp3 is replaced afterwards, these numbers describe the old version until it is scanned again.
File size How much room the mp3 takes on a disk, and how much data you use when you play or download it. It is roughly the bit rate multiplied by the length.
84.2 MB
88 321 618 bytes
File last changed When the mp3 on our server was last written - usually the day it was uploaded, or encoded again.
Length How long the recording plays. It is measured from the audio itself, so it is right even when a tag in the file says something else.
1:01:12
hours : minutes : seconds
Bit rate How much data is spent on each second of sound. More data keeps more detail when the audio is squeezed into an mp3: 128 kbit/s is acceptable, 192 is good, and 320 is the most an mp3 can hold.
192 kbit/s
good quality
Sample rate Digital audio is a long row of measurements of the sound wave. This is how many are taken every second. 44.1 kHz is the CD standard and 48 kHz the video and broadcast standard - both capture everything a human ear can hear.
44.1 kHz
44 100 measurements a second
Channels How many separate signals the file holds. Mono is one. Stereo is two - left and right - which is what lets a sound be placed somewhere between your speakers.
Stereo
2 channels
Codec The method used to shrink the audio. MP3 leaves out the detail an ear is least likely to miss, which makes the file about a tenth of the size of the original recording.
MP3
Loudness The average loudness of the whole recording, the way a listener hears it (“integrated loudness”, in LUFS). The closer to 0, the louder. Music services aim for about -14 and podcasts for about -16, so that you do not have to reach for the volume between tracks.
−15.9 LUFS
typical for streaming and podcasts
Loudness range The distance between the quiet passages and the loud ones, in LU (1 LU is 1 dB). A small number means an even, compressed sound - good in a car or on a phone. A large number means big swings between soft and loud.
4.9 LU
very even
True peak The highest level the signal ever reaches, including the peaks that appear between the measurements when the file is turned back into sound. 0 is the ceiling: above about -1 dBTP, a recording can crackle (“clip”) on some players.
−1.7 dBTP
safely below the ceiling
Dynamic range How far the loudest peaks stand above the loud parts of the recording, in dB - the “DR” number that music collectors compare albums by. A low number (under 8) means the sound has been squeezed until everything is equally loud: punchy, but tiring to listen to. 14 and up means the music has room to breathe, with real hits and real quiet. It says nothing about how loud the file is: turning the volume down does not change it. Chip music made of steady square waves naturally lands low.
DR 10
9.9 dB · moderately dynamic
Left channel level The average strength of the left channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the right channel.
−17.2 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Right channel level The average strength of the right channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the left channel.
−17.2 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Channel balance The left level minus the right level. Close to 0 dB means both sides are equally loud. More than about 1 dB and the whole mix leans towards one ear.
0.08 dB
balanced
Stereo width How strong the part that DIFFERS between left and right is, compared with the part they share. A very low number (-40 dB or less) means both sides carry the same sound - mono in practice. A higher number means a wider stereo picture; a very high one can sound thin on a single speaker.
−12.8 dB
ordinary stereo
Cover art in the file Whether a picture is stored inside the mp3 itself. A player shows it as the album art when the file is played somewhere else - in a car, on a phone, offline.
Yes

ID3 tags Text stored inside the mp3 file itself - title, artist, album and so on. It is what a music player, a phone or a car stereo shows while it plays the file, and it travels with the file wherever it is copied.

album The album or collection the file says it belongs to. Stations and encoders sometimes use this field for notes of their own.
Format: podcast.pod TERN
artist Who made or performs the recording, as it is written inside the file.
Flashback
genre The style of music, or the kind of programme, the file says it is.
Podcast
title The name of the recording, as it is written inside the file.
168. Fresh tracks from Deadline 26
track The number of this recording within its album - for a podcast, usually the episode number.
168
date The year, or date, the file says the recording is from.
2026

Measured from the mp3 file on our server by the station’s own analyser. Point at a label, or select its question mark, for what the number means.
