🎤 Production Notes

A demo episode that I got almost no warning about. I actually missed it, but sprung to action and contacted the orgas that helped me sourcing almost all music. Two tunes could not be fixed. Other than that the two toplists and the extra .exe-modules make sure you get a great experience of what Gerp could was.Colophon:The title alludes to the book "The world according to Gerp" by John Irving, that I read as young boy.

ericade.radio – Time for another episode of Flashback – Tracks from the past

DJ Daemon Last weekend, the Gerp 2022 ran in Skövde in Sweden. So we are now back in the demo scene season. I almost missed this one as I thought it had been cancelled. But here we are, another demo scene top list. First off, the Amiga 4 channel music.eight contestants and position eight goes to a morbid of a five finger punish. The song is called zero one two three and gets 28 points.

DJ Daemon: Last weekend, GERP 2022 ran in Skövde in Sweden. So, we are now back in the demo scene season again. I almost missed this one as it looked as it was cancelled. But here we are, another demo scene top list.

Morbid of Five Finger Punch – 0123

DJ Daemon: No, it's not the chiptune compo yet. But it almost sounds like that. Nice gamey music. Next up is place 7 and it's Optic of Planetjazz with Leadshoes, racking up 50 points. It sounds loungey and jazzy – me likey.

DJ Daemon No, it's not the Shiptune compo yet. But it almost sounds like that. Nice gamey music. Next up is Place 7 and its optic of planet jazz with lead shoes. Racking up 50 points. It sounds loungy and jazzy. Me likey.

Optic of Planet Jazz – Leadshoes

DJ Daemon: Place 6 starts up with a sci-fi computer blippety-blopp and then goes ambient with pretty standard rythms. It's Amiga Junglism and Xtra Spicey Mikey and Teis and Spot of Up rough. The song is called 1st fracture and nabs 50 points.

Amiga Junglism, Xtra Spicey Mikey, Teis and Spot of Up Rough – 1st fracture

DJ Daemon: Getting warmer. We are at place 5 and Teo and Virgill gives you The Drunken sampler. It's a very classic Amiga-themed song that could have fit well in a fast paced platform action game. I would have loved in in Robocop. It get's 56 points and the comments note that it was made for the…

DJ Daemon Getting warmer! We are at place 5 and Teo and Virgil gives you the Drunken Sampler. It's a very classic Amiga themed song and could have fit well in a fast paced platform action game. I would have loved it in Robocop. It gets 56 points and the comments note that it was made for the Mega Drive music disc by Titan.

Teo and Virgil – The drunken sampler

DJ Daemon: The next tune is on place 4 and is a parody of an old demo. It's Swedish Kefka of Insane and the song is called Data/Grill. If you wonder why it sounds like it was composed by a cat strolling on the keyboard, it's most likely because it was. The cat's name is Jesse. 102 point for a clever…

DJ Daemon The next tune is on place 4 and starts in Swedish. It's Swedish kefke of insane and the song is called Data Slash Grill. If you wonder why it sounds like it was composed by a cat strolling on the keyboard, it's most likely because it was. Yeah, the cat's name is Jesse. 102 points for a clever feline.

Kefka of Insane – Data/Grill

DJ Daemon: It's bronze time, people! Hyperunknown of Noice has created a song called “Goats and Snoblins”. That sounds like a name of a very hard game for the C64. He gets on the highscorelist with 109 point and third place.

DJ Daemon It's Bronze Time people! Hyper Unknown of Noise has created a song called Goats and Snoblins. That sounds like name of a very hard game for the C64. He gets on the high score list with 109 points and third place.

Hyperunknown / Noice – Goats and snoblins

DJ Daemon: Silver position for Ma2E of Desire. Not bad! The tune is called Thrill 4 noise. Another fine tune that would have fit well into a platformer from the early 90s. 133 points.

DJ Daemon Silver position for a maze of desire. Yes, not bad. The tune is called Frill 2 Noise, another fine tune that would have fit well in a platformer from the early 90s. Second place and 133 points.

MA2E – Thrilled 4 noise

DJ Daemon: I first heard of the combo Mygg and Bonefish, when they won with Brofists in Revision 2021. They're now hitting the first place a year later with “404 crew returns”. Really? Tried to surf to them, but got a page not found error. 162 points and I'll see myself out now…

DJ Daemon They first heard of the combo Mug and Bonefish when they won with Brofists in revision 2021. They're now hitting first place a year later with 404Q returns. Really? I tried to surf to them but got a page not found error. 162 points and I'll see myself out now.

Mygg and Bonefish of Insane – 404 crew returns

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon And that ladies and gentlemen, was the 4 channel Amiga competition from GURP. We are going on with a chiptune compo, not only by Amigas by the way, even C64s and other things can be heard. So 7 contestants and number 7 is Slash of Tech and Skövde Filler.

Slash of Tek – Sk0vde filler

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon That by the way got 54 points. Next up you get 2 for 1, or if it's 1 for 2 or whatever. It's place 6 with Hyper Unknown of Noise. It's Goat Hub and the song that comes after is Modem Family. I don't know what is it with Hyper Unknown and goats seem to be a recurring theme. Well this combo gets 57 points.

Hyperunknown of Noice – Goathub

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon And we are switching over to Modem Family. Seems to be the worst TV series ever. I don't think Netflix would pick it up with a poll. But it's a good song.

Hyperunknown / Noice – Goathub – Modem family

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon 5th place is Radiant, I break for no beat, 107 points. And 4th place, Clegg and Fegelhas, with Fairlight, 126 points. Ok, there, done. Yeah, I can't play them because there's some technical problem with them. Sorry. We go to, well, not 3rd place. You would think so, but actually this top list is insane. It's the 2nd place and the first entry. It's a tie you know. It's a wedder and a mug of insane and bitflipping therapy.

Vedder and Mygg of Insane – Bitflipping therapy

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon Ok, I think we sorted out that mess. So second place, second place so to speak. That is the second place of the second place. Ok, you getting it? Great. Yeah, what would that be? That would be Maze of Desire with Overjoyed by Grow. Also 127 points.

mA2E / Desire – Overjoyed by groove

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon Second time today we got a gold, we got a winner! It's the ship competition and the artist is Alpa of Innesain. And the song? It's called Got Gurpis! Hooray! Wait, did you make me say that? my god that's amazing! That's the coolest thing ever! I gotta admit, that was funny.

Alpa / Insane – Got gerpes, hurray!

DJ Daemon And that's the end of the top list. But for the rest of the hour, we have some of the music from the Amiga executable music. That's EXE files with great music, often pre-tracker and showcasing some new technology that's called Amiga Klang by Virgil. Yes, next up is Clumpy of Bach with Brunhilde.

ericade.radio – We love the demo scene

DJ Daemon speaks.

Chlumpie of Bock – Brunhilde

DJ Daemon What is this new Amiga Klang that we talking about? Invented by Virgil. According to Generation Amiga, Amiga Klang version 1.0 is a modular sample synthesizer for Commodore Amiga platforms. You can create executable music with small memory footprint and is specifically developed for the Amiga demo scene. We got about 10 minutes to go and we are going on with Alpa of Insane as we have waited.

DJ Daemon speaks.

Alpa of Insane – As we have waited

DJ Daemon speaks.

DJ Daemon

He got his Commodore 64 in 1989 and his first Amiga in 1990. A huge fan of tracker music and have had a long standing dream to create a radio show playing that kind of music. In 2020, that dream came true and in december Amiga Flashback started as a podcast. It was later renamed Flashback, tracks from the past and here we are.
He is also an orga for Swedish demo party Edison and a total retro nerd.

Mp3 file details

Waveform of episode 83, The world according to GERP, left channel above, right channel below: level in dB against time, 59:39 long. Open the waveform at full size (opens in a new tab)
Waveform A picture of the whole recording from start to end. The taller the shape, the louder that moment; the left channel is on top and the right channel below it. The scale up the side is the level in dB, the one along the bottom is the time. Select the picture to open it at full size.
Scan status Whether the station’s analyser could read this mp3. “OK” means every number in this box was measured from the actual audio, not copied from a tag that somebody typed.
OK
measured from the file itself
Scanned When the file was last analysed. If the mp3 is replaced afterwards, these numbers describe the old version until it is scanned again.
File size How much room the mp3 takes on a disk, and how much data you use when you play or download it. It is roughly the bit rate multiplied by the length.
83.2 MB
87 226 065 bytes
File last changed When the mp3 on our server was last written - usually the day it was uploaded, or encoded again.
Length How long the recording plays. It is measured from the audio itself, so it is right even when a tag in the file says something else.
59:39
minutes : seconds
Bit rate How much data is spent on each second of sound. More data keeps more detail when the audio is squeezed into an mp3: 128 kbit/s is acceptable, 192 is good, and 320 is the most an mp3 can hold.
195 kbit/s
good quality
Sample rate Digital audio is a long row of measurements of the sound wave. This is how many are taken every second. 44.1 kHz is the CD standard and 48 kHz the video and broadcast standard - both capture everything a human ear can hear.
44.1 kHz
44 100 measurements a second
Channels How many separate signals the file holds. Mono is one. Stereo is two - left and right - which is what lets a sound be placed somewhere between your speakers.
Stereo
2 channels
Codec The method used to shrink the audio. MP3 leaves out the detail an ear is least likely to miss, which makes the file about a tenth of the size of the original recording.
MP3
Loudness The average loudness of the whole recording, the way a listener hears it (“integrated loudness”, in LUFS). The closer to 0, the louder. Music services aim for about -14 and podcasts for about -16, so that you do not have to reach for the volume between tracks.
−14.3 LUFS
typical for streaming and podcasts
Loudness range The distance between the quiet passages and the loud ones, in LU (1 LU is 1 dB). A small number means an even, compressed sound - good in a car or on a phone. A large number means big swings between soft and loud.
2.2 LU
very even
True peak The highest level the signal ever reaches, including the peaks that appear between the measurements when the file is turned back into sound. 0 is the ceiling: above about -1 dBTP, a recording can crackle (“clip”) on some players.
−2.0 dBTP
safely below the ceiling
Dynamic range How far the loudest peaks stand above the loud parts of the recording, in dB - the “DR” number that music collectors compare albums by. A low number (under 8) means the sound has been squeezed until everything is equally loud: punchy, but tiring to listen to. 14 and up means the music has room to breathe, with real hits and real quiet. It says nothing about how loud the file is: turning the volume down does not change it. Chip music made of steady square waves naturally lands low.
DR 11
10.8 dB · moderately dynamic
Left channel level The average strength of the left channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the right channel.
−17.0 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Right channel level The average strength of the right channel over the whole recording (“RMS”), counted in dB below the loudest level a digital file can hold (dBFS). More negative means quieter. Compare it with the left channel.
−17.0 dBFS
average (RMS) over the whole file
Channel balance The left level minus the right level. Close to 0 dB means both sides are equally loud. More than about 1 dB and the whole mix leans towards one ear.
0.00 dB
balanced
Stereo width How strong the part that DIFFERS between left and right is, compared with the part they share. A very low number (-40 dB or less) means both sides carry the same sound - mono in practice. A higher number means a wider stereo picture; a very high one can sound thin on a single speaker.
−32.8 dB
narrow stereo
Cover art in the file Whether a picture is stored inside the mp3 itself. A player shows it as the album art when the file is played somewhere else - in a car, on a phone, offline.
Yes

ID3 tags Text stored inside the mp3 file itself - title, artist, album and so on. It is what a music player, a phone or a car stereo shows while it plays the file, and it travels with the file wherever it is copied.

album The album or collection the file says it belongs to. Stations and encoders sometimes use this field for notes of their own.
Flashback - Tracks from the past
artist Who made or performs the recording, as it is written inside the file.
The ERICADE Radio Network
album_artist The artist of the whole album, which a player uses to keep a compilation together.

composer Who wrote the music, when that is somebody other than the performer.
