You are listening to the Ericade Radio Network. Good evening and welcome to another hour of Amiga retro music. Happy New Year from DJ Demon and Amiga Flashback. Today, as we are awaiting 2021, we look back at 2020 and we look back at the Amiga world more than the rest of the world because we are tired about the Corona.
Corona Begin. And yeah, you can probably guess why I selected that particular song with that particular name to start this program. All the songs you will hear today with some exceptions will be new songs for this station. The first time they're ever heard here, but they're all of very nice quality, kind of the highest rating songs and some of them, yeah, they will be relating to New Year. Seems kind of fitting right now.Well, we got less than three hours until 2021 happens. And I have a bottle of champagne because that's what you're supposed to do.
drink my pain away. Maybe not the best tune to play after talking about champagne. Well, let's talk a little bit about something I just got. Yeah, I got a letter here in the mailbox a few minutes ago and it is addressed from, the friends on South Central BBS. Yeah, really cool thing. Three stickers. The first one is a Commodore one. Yeah.the classic chicken lips logo type. Then we have one that has the text straight out of some South Central. It's from that straight out of Compton album, isn't it? Yeah. And the third one is a really nice looking South Central logo type with some houses in the background and some kind of evening.Sunset sky really nice. So I actually have to like Give away the address here if you want to go to a Swedish BBS, it's in English It's using a legendary Amiga BBS program soon as you go there. You will exactly know what it is so go to South Central dot SC and Use telnet on port 10 23reach in there and you can use programs like n-conf or Amiga or pretty much any well functioning and behaved telnet client. I think you should go.
New Year's Day, let's go back 12 months, January of 2020 was coming around and we looked forward to a jam packed schedule of demo parties, lawn parties and gatherings in the retro community. When I look here at demoparty.net, I can see 15 different parties that have been planned and most of them were actually taking place. But it's my guess that the ones that were in January, February, they actually worked the way they were intended. People come around and they met and they brought their old computers and hooked them up. But then in March, everything went kinda bad. Well, you know exactly what Corona is all about, so let's skip that. But in April and May, Syntex Society Easter Party and Birdie Online,Well, they became just that. Online parties as soon as I know. I don't know if any of them were canceled, but I don't have any notes about it. But what I do know is that phone data that went in June, I attended it. It was digital or online or what do you have you. Gubbdata in Lund. Eddison 2020, which I also participated in. And then we had Sommarhack.something called ACGG, Amiga-Sommerhack, Syntax Society, Summer Party, and in the end it was Fondata. Most of them had to be online and this poses a bit of a problem because, you know, everybody's doing this online stuff, hooking up a lot of computers and trying to get it to work just as well as if you were projecting in a big screen.and it should work online. So it has been a year of struggles and oops, the sound doesn't work. Can you hear me? Where did that stereo channel go? Is it in black and white? Is it upside down? Can you hear me? Yeah, you know. Well, I look forward to them when those gatherings are for real.
some seriously heavy chords. It's called Blind Justice. This is Amiga Flashback and DJ Demon. We need to open the calendar and start in the beginning of 2020 and walk you through all the important stuff that did happen. I may have forgotten some stuff or simply seen them as not that important, but the main and big picture things going on that is.2019 had left us with a number of really nice stuff. For an example, a brand new Vampire version 4 standalone. The first Amiga that came in a box and was feature complete and had all the connectors you needed to connect all joysticks and hardware and stuff and also would work on an HDMI screen. It came with the fantastic CPU.The FPGA, that is the virtualized CPU if you want to, that made this Amiga become a really masterpiece of speed and beauty, if you like that thing. The other thing we also got that I can remember the a lot, but Eyebrow, the new browser, reloaded and now almost up to speed. So the hopes for 2020, they were great.
First last, let's jump back to April of 2020. You probably know about Commodore's really interesting little failure. What of them you might ask? Well, the Commodore 65. It was supposed to be a superior version of the 64, but it was ultimately cannedProbably because it was becoming a little bit like a budget Amiga and we don't need more of those said Commodore and simply skipped it. But it was actually a working prototype and two were built in this world and they are super hard to get hold on. So some company did create a modern version called Mega 65.which works like the Commodore 65 would have with some extra features and possibilities to connect it to modern equipment like screens and HDMI and stuff. And in April, Clotoo licensed the ROM for this Mega 65, which is kind of a thing given how reluctant said company had been to ever give away licensings.to stuff. You probably remember that 8-bit guy tried to get a license for the C64. But this meant that the Mega 65 could take one big leap forward. As I'm speaking right now, I don't think it's ready for delivery yet, but here's to hoping.
song I just can't resist playing. It's called Demon. Yeah, thanks I guess. We're going on here with Sunlight. More nice tunes coming up.
In May 2020, Generation Amiga noted that the Warp 2060 accelerator for the Amiga 1200 was launching, but only to beta testers. And that makes me wonder one thing, is it worth it? I accelerators are something that you really want for an Amiga in order to get something out of it because that's...25 to 30 year old technology and It can do better if you can upgrade it But the common knowledge have been that 6830s that are cheap and plentiful are enough The 6860 the last Motorola CPU in the 68000 series Was kind of the holy grail in the end of the Amiga era it was after that Commodore had failed but beforepeople kinda lost track of the whole thing. It was maybe the last hurrah if you want to. But today the 6860s are very uncommon and they hard to get. So if you buy a card like this it probably will not come with a CPU. You have to source that somewhere from. It is rumored that Chucky or John Hattell has about 100 of those 6860s left. So they are super expensive.and whole car is not cheap either and getting an old card, old stock from some other vendor, yeah that's so expensive that you can easily pay like 1500 dollars for it. Which makes me wonder if the 6860 is really worth it or if that's just another fine wine for someone who likes to collect.
Also on Generation Amiga, they noted Eyebrows 2.5.3 has just been released. It implements an SSL session cache for all HTTPS connections. You remember a few minutes ago I spoke about Eyebrows coming out in a new version in 2019 I think it was. Well, the old one, 2.4, it's from the mid-naughties.well, 2000s if you want to. And this new one would actually bring the Amiga browsing experience kinda up to speed. It implemented HTML version 4 and it also implemented support for TLS 1.3. But it did not give you anything like CSS, that cascading style sheets which all browsers must support because all web pages pretty much requires it.And also it's slow as morass, but if you want to like experience modern homepages on your Amiga 1200 with an accelerator, it's kind of fun really.
get some Beatles Abbey Road feelings from this one. It's called Lord of Wind and I call those songs coffee break tunes. You know it's nine minutes long so I can go out and have something to drink. We are proceeding with 0-4-F. Weird kind of song name but well.
We are slowly leaving the first hour here on Amiga Flashback. Happy New Years are in order as we are soon like 2 hours and 15 minutes away from the new happy year. We hope it's gonna be a happy year because it will not be hard to beat 2020. I don't think so. And still up on this program we will be speaking about Apollo OS,
Format Broken Heart Good news everyone, we are now a real podcast. Today iTunes, Google Play and Spotify added us to their public directories. So if you wanna listen and you're already not doing so, well, search for The Ericade Radio Network wherever pods are found.
Format with IFF, a classic one. I think it's been around quite some while and if I remember correctly it was from some computer game back in the day. But yeah, that's what it is. We're proceeding here with a piece of magic. The second episode or something.
Leaving the first hour of Amiga flashback, playing you out with a world in a nut.
to the Arikade Radio Network. Good evening and welcome to another hour of Amiga retro music. And Amiga flashback. This hour we will be talking about Apollo OS. We will be talking about what Cloneto did to this world when it comes to litigation, more litigation and then some, I don't know, litigation. But I'm more hungry for egg and bacon.
With the eggs and bacon safely digested, let's move on and talk about the Apollo OS. If you have a vampire, you probably know that it can run pretty much anything, having the workbench 3.1 and the kickstarts do work fine, but they're still under copyright control, and the vampire...people thought. The developers of Vampire, I'm pretty sure they're not vampires for real, they thought that maybe we can do something else. We can provide you with an operating system that is not such a legal hassle. So they turned to Aroes. There is something called Aroes Caffeine Earlybird. In May 2020, it was rebranded Apollo OS.and is what you should be using with the Vampire Standalone version 4. Fully compatible, they say, with your old games and programs, it is capable of simply bringing the Amiga into, well, modern times. And as a long time RS user, I do think that is a good thing.
one of those New Year's songs. We will be going into July 2020 and talk a little bit about some celebrations, some memories and also the foundation of a new company. But we'll go on first with Ayla Megamix.
The Eracade Radio Network, stuck in our mother's basement since the 80s. Also stuck in some kind of basement since the 80s is the Amiga itself. We note that in July 2020, it was 35 years since the Amiga saw the day of light. The year then was 1985 and it was just called the Amiga. The 1000 name came later. This computer was looking for a purpose and Andy Warhol gave it to them. He actually showed how he could make some really cool drawings and pictures on it. It fit him very well the way I understand it. And what we can say is that thanks to this bumpy start, the Amiga revolution started.
In July, CA Acquisition Corporation announced a new company name, Amiga Corporation. Yes, and behind that is of course Clontu, the Italian company that has fought a number of legal battles, for an example against Hyperion and is currently trying to...assemble all kind of Amiga trademarks and all kind of symbols and pretty much everything that Commodore left when it went bankrupt and try to make it into one company again. But it turned out that it was a bumpy ride.
Well, Amiga Corporation started out and the first target they had was Amico. It's a US trademark and Amico is Italian and simply means a female friend. The same way that Amiga is Spanish for female friend. The Amico was something that Intellivision Entertainment was working on as some kind of video game system. It should have preloaded games and all kind of things, but the name is simply too much like Amiga thought cloned to an Amiga corporation. So they started desuing them and what exactly came out of that?is unknown, but it is a pattern, something that we see them doing time and time again. And when we get to September, you will see what it actually led to this whole wave of new legal action.
Hybrid Sparda by Klopp. Thinking about horses? I know I do. So in July we were treated to the news that a new Terrible Fire 360 prototype was out. Yeah, the CD32 would finally get a 68,060 based accelerator card from no one else than Terrible Fire. But it wasn't meant to be, because we noticed in September, skipping ahead a little bit here, that on a forum called AmigaLava.com, our users write this. I'm not sure if you saw the new unfolding drama, but today Stephen Leary, that's terrible fire by the way, officially deleted all of his YouTube videos and has apparently left the Amiga hobby scene for good.He dropped a video about it 4 days ago with the promise that when it hit 1000 views it too would be deleted. I caught it at 985. Sometime in the next 30 minutes it was gone as was his channel. So if you're after TF534 it will have to be aftermarket. Well actually maybe not. That's partiallythe reason he decided to quit. Apparently someone from Poland who relocated to Germany was cloning his boards against Stevens will. So there may be more TF cards out there after all, but without future support or updates. Yeah, that ends a very promising accelerator board carrier. Turbofirehas done this a number of times, at least one more that I know of, where he simply said I'm quitting, but thankfully he came back. But my guess, we are leaving December and actually into January right now. I'm recording this at the first of January, so this is a bit of post-production program if you want to. Then we can say this, that he will not be coming back this time. I don't think so.
Coffee blues. And I would say I'm pretty blue without coffee. Alright, let's skip back to August of 2020. Good news. We need some of that, don't we? Amikit XE was released. Works on any Vampire version 2 or 4. Again from Generation Amiga. Well, Amikit is a compilation of over 400 installed and configured Amiga programs. Nice. You can be excused to be bit confused here because Amiga Kit, Amikit and Apollo OS and Arrows, very easy to get them confused. Amikit is a bit of an operating system with, as I said, games and programs and stuff that you can easily run on an emulator or in this case on a vampire. Arrows and Apollo bespoke about them a few minutes ago, so I'm not mentioning them. An Amiga Kit that is a storein Great Britain.
with Lamril Free. That's what my liner notes says so we'll go with that. Bouncing back into September 2020 we noticed that Belgian based Hyperion Entertainment, you know the people behind this Amiga One, also behind Workbench 3.1.4 and Amiga OS 4. Yeah they pretty much gave up.against Clone 2 I guess. They namely withdrew the registrations for the US trademark Amiga, which also included the V-mark, and the V-mark is this check mark that you have with a rainbow color scheme on. And the Boeing ball. Yeah, you know, the red and white animated ball that has been pretty much an Amiga in unofficial symbol for so many years.originally made as a demo by Commodore. So as you probably know I'm joking about why won't they license Amy the squirrel while they're at it? Because that's also quite an unofficial mascot for their Amiga. What Cloneto is doing or has been doing for the year is kind of something I have a bit of a problem understanding truly.
Eyes with a new year. Pretty fitting, but of course I selected it for that purpose. We're now in October 2020 and the only news I have to you is a pretty nice little thing. It's namely 20 years since the Amiga 1200 launched. The Amiga 1200, the savior of the Amiga. The year was 1992 and by that time Commodore waskinda hard press for a success and the Amiga 1200 did give them sorta kinda success but it was too late for them in the day and we can talk about the Amiga 1200's shortcomings because it was a great computer but it was too, as I said, too late and with too little advantage to actually mean anything in the end.
Gateway and we're now leaving December. Actually, we already have January the first and I have eaten my first pizza for the year because that's what you're supposed to do. But what did happen during October to December in the Amiga front? I have not found anything worth noticing, but of course probably been something I missed or I can't say. But let's look at 2020 from an Amiga perspective.I mean there has been very little new things happening at all. Very few new hardware stuff. I mean some things are in beta, some things are promised, but it haven't really delivered that much. So it's like one of those transition years where you go from 2019 with nice stuff to what I hope to be 2021 with nice stuff. Here's to hoping.
What's the name of the song? Well, if I say INCOMING!
One thing that I think is really cool with Amiga music is it's pretty common theme to give them names that are really nasty or maybe implying that there is something, you know, adult in them. This song Janus Brothel, actually is a pretty innocent song and the name in spite of the name basically. We're going on with Jesper Kyd and the song, song, Swedish by the way. I sometimes forget that I should speak English. The song is called Nightfall.
Next up here is My Tailor is The Dealer by Joss and Wander. It's magic that many innocent songs have very revealing and adult titles. This is not an exception.
listening to the Arikade Radio Network. Good evening and welcome to another hour of Amiga Retro music. The last one on your podcast player for this episode of Amiga Flashback. Right, we're continuing with a song called New Year 2003. Has it been that long?
Totally unrelated note, I heard something that Bill Maher said. He pointed out that if you only pay one dollar for your tacos, you shouldn't expect them to contain meat. And then he pointed out that taco spelled backwards is, cat?
Nio, that's the name of the song. A few hours ago my father called me and we spoke about the hack against Sami. Sami is an agency for artists here in Sweden. It's connected to this whole royalty sphere if you want to. He has an account there because he's a composer of music and he also sings and plays instruments. So he was wondering what do you dowhen your information has leaked out. A some it was hacked yesterday. Information such as name, email addresses and all kinds of stuff including receiving bank accounts were probably compromised as far as we know today. Now my father is in no bad situation as he has done a lot to secure whatever he can but it leads to the question what can you really do?when your information is leaking out. I have a hundred accounts when I checked it last time. During all the years I ever used the internet for various services and each of them are prone to leak out something if you know, you get hacked. What can you do about it? You do all the things right. You follow best practices, you patch, you secure, you keep everything updated. And still you are on the losing part of this equation. As soon as someone gets hacked a little bit of your life gets into some hackers hands. Life is not fair.
Pormout and we are going on with the last new song for this podcast. Slightly magic New Year melody.
must say one thing, it feels a little bit silly that you can talk about slightly magic. I mean either it is magic or it isn't magic. And when somebody figures out how it actually works, it's not magic at all. Never was. It's called science.
little bit of a cutesy called MiG-29. That's an aircraft isn't it? Russian type? Don't know. It's a song anyway. We're going on here with C2.
The Ericade Radio Network, coming to you taped from a bunker in northern Stockholm. This is DJ Demon, and hell if I know what a tape is, but I keep playing them anyway.
Dr. Awesome, the obligatory Dr. Awesome. We are forced by law to play him. No, actually that's not true at all. Well, we are closing in to the last 30 minutes of this podcast. Some little stories to tell, but mostly music. And here comes one that I come back to every time. I absolutely love this. This might be the best module of them all.
The Eracade Radio Network. The Commodore was limited, but the Amiga is eternal. Yeah, maybe the Amiga. That is of course a joke on the fact that Commodore can be seen as a limited corporation. Unlimited is a legal way of running corporations. ditto. But I actually think Commodore was a real corporation because it was traded on Wall Street, so to speak. Anyway. We are going on with meat mask. It's kind of worm. Worm thing, you know, you put it on as a bait.
What are you looking forward to in the Amiga market 2021? Well, I got a little list exactly what Gilbert and Sullivan would have said, but my list contains the mega 65, you know, the Commodore 65, the ones that were never sold by Commodore. It was pulled. Yeah, I know I told you this.Previously in this program, but I hope it comes out next year this re branding this Remake maybe is the word I should be using Another thing I really want. I want a new ultimate 2. I love the c64 from stuff from Gil Gideon's logic there, but I want a new one. Come on. I want that one with a faster CPUbetter FPGA and maybe some nice stuff like recording audio and better support for Ethernet. One can hope at least. What more am I looking forward for? The Warp 2060. I don't know if that has been released. I can't find no notes. It's as elusive as... I'm sorry, Bigfoot. Always Bigfoot with me. I don't know why really. So that's my list of stuff I want to see. I also would love to seesome kind of Vampire version 4 for, I don't know, 1200, 500, but that would be pushing it. Be happy with what you got.
You know, I said this, I'm so happy that we are now available as a real podcast on Spotify and iTunes and those services. But I have one little request for you. Okay, if you could please do this for me. If you can find a place where they will provide podcasts and we are not on there, please send an email to radio at Eric K dot net and tell me to put it there.Well, suppose that you actually want to listen to it on that service.
me if I'm wrong, isn't this song chaos from state of the art? With this weird pattern that baby that pops up every now and then and the girls dancing around and stuff. I mean that is such a great demo. I've spoken about it previously of course but I can't get enough of it. But I would say that Enigma with their Mars lander trying to take off and whatever it is, that is still the best demo ever created.
Music from the geeks of the 80s and 90s, the Ericade Radio Network delivers. I would guess that actually most of the songs that we are playing here comes from the 90s rather than the 80s. There were probably a lot of tunes from the 80s, but not as many as later on. And in 1994-95, this trance music garbagecame along and I try to avoid those songs as much as I can. Some are playing here but not many. I don't really know why they had to sample whole songs. We can't play them anyway because you know, they're copyrighted.
3D demo tune. Glittery little thing that I would say. We're going on with Beast Play tune and yes it is from Shadow of the Beast.
This is DJ Daemon signing off. Thanks for listening to this podcast, Amiga Flashback. We can be found wherever you find podcasts at all, leading you out into the good night consummation.

About the artist Amiga Flashback View all tracks ›
Started in december 2020, Amiga Flashback was the first name of "Flashback, tracks from the past". It features nice midnight DJ banter from DJ Daemon, interviews, discussions about retro-stuff and lots of tracked music. Most of it is Amiga tracked tunes. In May 2021, it was renamed and started allowing all kinds of tracked tunes instead of mostly Amiga ones.

🎙 The people behind the podcast
