🎤 Production Notes

I had to create this while away from home. I packed up a Shure SM7B, my Rodecaster Pro and travelled to Kläppen, near Sälen in Northern Stockholm. The story of the live broadcast a few weeks earlier:https://erik.zalitis.se/retrotech/going-live-a-tale-from-the-radio-trenches/Colophon:Edison invented the light bulb and light bulbs are often symbols for great ideas in cartoons. It's probably not one of my most convoluted title-origins.

Welcome to another episode of flashback tracks from the past. Ahoy there mateys. No, no, no, likes that anymore. Just stop. Okay. What has a badly made pirate hats? A barn filled with geeks in Northern Stockholm and the newest and coolest tracked music in common. Well, that would be Edison party to went to 21. The piracy themed demo party.that ran from the 9th of July until the 11th. Today we give you the tracked music top list, the highlights and in the end of the show, FsFreak tells you the whole story of Edison.

Erik Zalitis 03:04.206

The wrecks and ambivalence. The first harbor we stop by today is of course the Tract Music Competition. We have 11 Amiga, C64 and NES entries to play, so let's get going. On place 11 we find a morbid over five finger punch who hails from southern Stockholm in Sweden and starts up this list with leftovergrabbing the last position with 67 points.

Erik Zalitis 06:43.246

On 10th place it's an epic fight between a man and chicken, demon chicken even. The song is called Demon Chicken, the boss fight made on fast tracker and it was made by Edvind of Memory Leak and of course it's the demon chicken or devilish chicken from Monkey Island that's at fault here. 81 points.

Erik Zalitis 07:17.023

The demon chicken!

Erik Zalitis 08:58.846

second clause in this place. Okay, well time for position number nine and that would be a ghost ship by synesthesia from Defect and Rift. Another Amiga tune for your pleasure racking up 92 points.

Erik Zalitis 11:48.43

position 8 and we are back into the C64 part of the demo scene. Yes, it's called Strange Range by Soya of Sensor Design with a pretty woman's face and 99 points to boot.

Erik Zalitis 14:34.318

Place 7. So how was the future back then? Well, actually 8BM seems to have an idea about it. Retro Super Future 87 is yet another tracked tune and it gets 100 points.

Erik Zalitis 18:37.226

On place 6 and grabbing 103 points that will be Bionic Symbiote by Slays of Defiance. Slays coming from Sweden is no longer last place Slays. This one really got some serious beats.

Erik Zalitis 22:06.51

Lace 5, and it seems like the Swedes are dominating this. You know, Sawyer from Censored Design and Slays from Defiance, both Swedish. So 8PM is the odd one out here, from Poland. And again, now it's time for Weather of Insane, and yes, he is Swedish, and the song is an Amiga one, called Glorious Disaster, and it gets 106 points.

Erik Zalitis 26:13.966

Alright, this is something, something you don't hear every day at least. That would be the Captain Medley, and it's from Åreborg, of the art of never getting anything done. It grabs fourth place with an NES, that is Nintendo Entertainment System Track, and 110 points.

Erik Zalitis 28:24.654

And we are on bronze position. We are going on with Fegelhaus of Fairlight and yes that's Swedish. Swedish as apple pie. Susanne Rauter is the song and it's a reference to actress Susanne Reuter. It's made for the Commodore 64 and gets third place 115 points.

Erik Zalitis 31:33.821

The silver medal goes to the team that gave us Brofist, you know, the winner of the Revision Demo Party 2021. We're talking about Croatian artist Bonefish and Swedish Mugg. The song is called Two Days Later.and grabs second place on 116 points.

Erik Zalitis 34:44.717

all the time people and it's not every day you hear of a c64 tune grabbing the first position on a tracked compo but yeah it does it's hexputz or hexputz or something i don't know it's by stinson of genesis project yeah i'm gonna say it he's swedish and it's 117

points enjoyErik Zalitis 38:14.818

We are at the end of the list. Edison Party 2021, as I said previously, ran on the 9th of July and it was under heavy competition, fierce competition even, from three other demo parties. So it made a rather good impression, irregardless if you ask me. 30-40 people came to Egybygård in Northern Stockholm on location.and I was one of them. And also a number of people were online. I don't know how many they were. And I broadcast live on Friday and on Saturday. So for me, it was great to be back on a real physical demo party meeting real people.

Erik Zalitis 42:21.198

Tracks, BO Beyond. This is the Arikade Radio Network and flashback tracks from the past. Your favorite podcast, I hope. So about Edison 2021. Let's talk about it from the beginning to the end, but I'm not the right person to do so. So I say hello to a person that can give you all the little details.Hello, my name is Albin and I'm one of the main orgas this year. and you're known to the world as FS Freak. Any reason for that name? It's kind of a long story. It's kind of a combination of different things. It's a bit too long to take here actually. I've used it for maybe 15 years so it feels stupid to change it now. No, no, it works. And it's kind of unique as well, that's pretty fun. If you Google it you will probably find me. I mean you remember the guys that could have like, I don't know, Satan or Calracer or it's like Dimeadossin or those. Exactly.Alright, so let's take this quickly. are, as you call yourself, an Orgasm. That is, are organizing. So please tell me, how did you get into Edison? I visited first in, I think it was 2015. I wasThere is another party called Birdy in Uppsala, Sweden. We met a few guys from Edesson there and they said, hey, how would you like to join our party? We are always looking for more people to come and visit.

Erik Zalitis 44:19.98

We had made a lot of productions on Birdie and they said, hey, you can come to a real demo party. Without video games and stuff like that. Birdie is kind of a mixed bag. There's both gaming and scene related stuff as well. Are you more into retro scene or current stuff? When the productions I've been involved with is like new school productions, PC and...But when I make music I still use like old 90s tracker software. When you say new school and old school, I kind of get what you mean, but when is the kind of year that changes from new to old or back? Yeah, that's kind of a... I don't think there's like a super clear distinction there.I would say PC used to also be old school when you look at old school PC demos from the 90s, early 2000s. I think these days when we talk about old school we are talking about Commodore 64, Atari, Amiga, PC took over. So old school is more like these old platforms which are still very much alive. Thanks to the demo scene. Yeah, really. You're really carrying the torch for an old tradition, so to speak. Yeah, yeah. Okay, so now we know that. When did Edison start? It's like 10 years old or something, right? Yeah, I'm not exactly sure when the first party was. I joined in... I went here the first time at least 2015 and I kind of became...part of the organization more and more as the years went by. I would say last year and this year I would consider myself a main orga with being involved from the start. In the beginning I just held a few special compos, like live compos and stuff like that. I guess that's how...

Erik Zalitis 46:32.994

became involved more. Okay, so here's a thing. Why is it called Edison? Is it a connection to the famous inventor or something else? Yeah, I think I've heard the story. Okay, there was, I think there was like an organization, like, I don't know the word in English, for non-profit organization, which called themselves Edis. And then I think it came naturally that, hey, we're going to organize a demo party. Let's call it Edison. Don't write this on Wikipedia. I think there is some somewhere along those lines. Definitely a cool name, if not anything. mean, how did you get to Egebigård? As long as I've been involved here as a normal visitor, it's always been here.Yeah, I think... I'm not sure. I'm also not sure. I think you need to do another interview later with Wayland. I think he knows more actually about the history. Yeah, yeah, that's cool. But I was thinking, so now you're back after the corona, were you scared to go here? I mean, after all, I mean... Yeah, no, not really. I mean, last year we did like a pure online.Online event which was really fun as well I didn't think it was going to be that fun But it was actually like a really good vibe going on on Twitch and scene set and in the chat and everything But but no, I wasn't scared I've got my I got my flu shots and everything. Yeah, I got my vaccination I got my second shot yesterday actually, so I don't know. I hope the Delta thing isn't a problem. Yeah, hopefullyAnd since the venue is still limited to 50 people, we're doing everything online as well, so everyone can participate. I guess most people are online there. Okay, so what can you expect from Edison if you didn't really know about it, just see, okay, demo party, what are you offering? Yeah, I would say anyone who's into creative stuff,

Erik Zalitis 48:56.236

I mean, it can be music, can be animation or video or programming, like graphics programming. I would say come here or at least check out the stream and see what it's all about. Also the people. People are really inclusive. I mean, there's a rivalry, but it's friendly rivalry. It's not like...like way back when when crack groups were like you know competing and yeah yeah yeah remember that when when everyone i mean the word labor was kind of like if you were not good yeah yeah but it wasn't the term the way i understand it is like someone who is totally incompetent and doesn't know about how to do a demo but in the demo scene it's more was used against people that knew what they were doing but it weren't good yeah yeahBut I get the feeling that when people get older this kind of animosity runs away and you get more like it's just cool to meet. Exactly, it's nice to meet, it's nice to talk to people, you can always learn more stuff. I would say, mean, even if you don't think you will win with a production, enter with it anyway. Like participation these days, I would say, is way more...encouraging and interesting than like even if you know yeah this group is going to be here they will probably like win the demo compo but I mean whatever strange thing has strange things still happen and yeah yeah first time funny funny side story if I may yeah first year I came here with the yeah with with my group so to speakWe entered with something really simple, a PC demo, really simple. Was not thinking, yeah, we want to win, but we still want to show, hey, we are here now and here's our tag or whatever. But we actually managed to beat one of the biggest demo groups in Sweden. They got third place and we got second place. That is most bad. No, no. I mean, OK, they weren't really trying their hardest, but still.

Erik Zalitis 51:10.618

Just to see this group on the score list was pretty funny. Yeah, but that's a thing. If you really want to win, you try hard and then you have a better chance. mean, getting a bit stuffed and fat and saying, I don't care, I'm the best. That's not a good recipe for no. No, okay. So today we had a bit of slow start, but we are going on here. We had some demos. What's happening tomorrow?Tomorrow is the big day when all the competitions, like this year's entries will be displayed and people are still sitting around here working on them. Of course I see people making music over here. see people programming, all kinds of cool stuff. that's the main event, that's seeing all the creativity come together, all the entries.

Erik Zalitis 52:10.373

Participants, entries. So yeah, that's for sure the biggest thing. Today there is going to be pretty soon like a live graphics duel which is like when two artists compete live head to head. They only have 15 minutes to make something cool. It's not really any prestige that completes more like fun for the audience, I would say. It's kind hard to find people who actually want to be live doing something. But I keep telling them it's for fun. Yeah, mean, even if you really screw up, people are going to have a laugh. Yeah, exactly. And people vote. You can probably win a round in that comp just for doing something fun and unexpected.Yeah, that seems like a plan. I got okay Sunday is not much going on. Are you closing shop? pretty much people wake up have breakfast and Yeah, and okay, got too long for next year Yeah, I got one last question for you because i'm doing a podcast that kind of play the track music that compete in in the competition Can you tell me just a little bit about the tracked demo competition? Yeah, sure. so that isA music compo where you're only supposed to use a tracker program which is a pretty old school way, a pretty, what would you call it, like a step sequencer. An old school step sequencer which was really popular on Amiga and later PC as well. So I mean the only limitation really is because people have done some super incredible things with those programs.but it's more like you're limited to these formats like the mod format and the XM format or S3M and stuff like that. You can't really hand in an mp3. There's like a wild, that's the like the streaming music compo and that's cool as well but this is a bit more constrained. Thank you very much FsFreak, one of the orgas or organizers of the whole thing that is Edison Party 2021.

Erik Zalitis 54:30.03

Next Edison is in the summer 2022. I hope we will be going there as well. Anyway, it's time to say bye bye now from me and go into the last music. It's Drax again with the Drax mania. Next podcast will be out in a week and the next episode will be broadcast on next Saturday at 9 p.m. Swedish time, Central European time.

Erik Zalitis 58:26.594

All that remains right now is for me DJ Demon to say bye bye now and see you in a bit. Remember our webpage is erikade.radio. That's erikade.radio. Erikade with a C. Going on with last song of the whole hour. That would be Harley by Drax.
